If your dog is losing hair one of the possible causes could be due to hereditary reasons. These are genetics which are passed down through the family tree from parent to offspring and this happens ion dogs just like humans. Those genes are everywhere.

Your puppy starts to lose hair between three to six weeks of being born. This is a hereditary condition with multi-colored coated dogs such as collies, basset hounds and beagle and goes by the name of black hair follicular dysplasia/alopecia/dystrophy.
Pituitary dwarfism can happen in your puppy if he does not develop at the normal speed and as a result does not lose his puppy coat as he matures. A result of this can be hair loss. Pituitary dwarfism can be caused by a malfunctioning pituitary gland or a deficiency of certain hormones in your dog.
At around six months of age your dog starts to lose blue or fawn colored hair. This is known as colour dilution/mutant alopecia and the breeds possibly affected include the Great Dane, Greyhound and Doberman.
Seborrhea is another hereditary condition which can contribute to dog hair loss. It happens where hair follicles, sebaceous glands and the outer skin layers become hyper productive. Breeds affected can include the cocker spaniel, west highland terrier and springer spaniel. Visible signs of seborrhea can include an oiliness of the dogs' skin, a bad smell and scratching. Hair loss may be a consequence so be on the look out for it.
