Commander Dog
Obedient dogs are not only an asset to the community, they are a joy to have as a member of your family. Once they are taught proper behavior within your family circle, you can gradually introduce them to the outside world.
There are misconceptions on certain breeds, such as Pit bull and rottweilers. Some believe these canines are naturally aggressive and can not be trained. On the contrary, aggression is a learned behavior, and too often abused animals use aggression in self defense.
First, consider yourself as your dog's pack leader, because canines are born with the instinct to follow the dominant figure within the group. Never intimidate or punish your dog to gain his respect! Once you have established your role as commander, you can move on to training.
Basic dog training commands begin with teaching your dog to heel. If you plan to take your dog for walks, he must learn this command and walk beside you on a loose lead. Do not allow him to tug or pull you along, or you will begin to lose control, and he will sense this and begin testing your authority.
If he attempts to drag you, stop, give the leash a firm tug and say "NO", which is another request he must learn. Use the leash as a tool to guide him into the correct position each time he wanders.
Each time you pause, use the command "sit". Guide his rear to the ground if necessary, and make him stay until you give the request to heel. Always give praise, but not too excitedly, or he will sense this. Remain calm and use even vocal tones when schooling.
"Down" is another dog training simple command essential to learn. This will teach him not to jump on others or anywhere else you prefer he stay off of, such as new furniture or your bed.
Good schooling will help your dog develop proper behavior and you will also notice a greater bond growing between you. He will focus his attention on you at the proper moments and begin to anticipate your next request. This is when you know he is ready for advanced dog training commands.
Consistent training sessions will also give your furry friend something to look forward to, if you make each experience fun and rewarding. It will become his "job". High energy breeds will relish these times and they will have an outlet to get rid of some excess energy.
Creating a daily routine will help your progress immensely, and no doubt your dog will remind you when it's time to get to "work". Remember to use positive reinforcement and reward with praise and a treat during and at the end of your session. Then let him romp and play at will.
