Dominance in canines can manifest in a variety of ways, depending on the trigger and your pet's environment. For example, he might respond aggressively when you touch him while he is eating. This is a protective trait that is instinctive; he is guarding his resources. He might also display dominance if he wants something that he is being denied. An example is a toy that you are withholding from him. He might use charm at first. If you refuse to surrender the toy, he might escalate his approach to barking.
As with many unwanted behaviors, dominant traits among canines often spring from the manner in which they perceive their status within their pack. If your pooch is showing less and less restraint in getting what he wants, it's time to actively curb his behavior. Here are a few helpful suggestions:
Establish Your Authority
This is critical. Every pack has a leader; you are the leader of your house. From your dog's perspective, if the leadership role has not been clearly defined, it is up for grabs. Some canines are content to be followers, instinctively looking to their owner for leadership. Others are more aggressive. They'll gradually take increasing liberties in order to acquire what they desire.
Establish your status as leader as soon as possible. That does not mean physically or verbally punishing your pet if he does something you find unacceptable. Rather, it means being authoritative and encouraging at the same time by rewarding good conduct.
Avoid Games That Encourage The Behavior
Many owners unwittingly train their dogs to adopt dominant traits that are later expressed against them. For example, they'll play Tug Of War with them. Not only is that an aggressive game, but it teaches your pooch to match his strength and skill against your own. That is a dangerous habit to encourage. Avoid games like this. Instead, play fetch. That will teach him to play with you rather than competing against you.
Get An Early Start
Begin training and socializing your canine as early as possible. Ideally, you should begin when he is a puppy. Many of the most difficult behaviors to curb are learned during the puppy stage and never discouraged. By the time a pup has become an adult, an unacceptable behavior is much harder to modify. Start early.
Provide An Outlet For Exercise
Exercise (or, lack thereof) plays a key role in discouraging many types of behavioral problems. Dogs that receive plenty of exercise each day tend to be happier and mild-mannered. On the other hand, dogs that receive little to no exercise on a daily basis tend to be difficult to control.
Take your pooch for two or three walks each day. They don't have to be long walks; a single mile will suffice. The key is to provide your canine with a regular outlet for physical activity.
Curbing dominance in your dog is important. While few canines will turn on their owners, an overly-dominant pooch might do so. By taking the measures described above, you can ensure the safety of your family while training your dog to be a loving and loyal companion.
