My dogs hot spots & ear infections?

My dog has hot spots that I have been treating at home which subsequintly have caused ear infections.
Look I'll be honest I cannot afford to take him to the vet, its not that I dont care its that I cant. I Sub. Teach and were on holiday, I need my unemp. to live. I browsed through previously answered questions similar to mine and that seemed to be everyones answer, I'll appreciate any input but solutions are preferred.
OK can i use vasoline to help "loosen" the stuff in his ears?
And medications, dosage, kinds, wt. to dsg.?
On top of the sulofodene? medication hydrocortisone spray & oatmeal baths I have shaved his face.

Well, the suggestion to consult a veterinarian is so common because it is really the best one, but if it's not an option for you at this time, it just isn't. Meanwhile, how can we try to help out your poor dog?

The hot spots don't cause ear infections, although it's fairly common to see them together. Both problems can be started off by allergies and then complicated by scratching, which leads to secondary bacterial or fungus infections, and both can be very painful and itchy. Even the best dog may bite while undergoing hot spot care, so be cautious.

Shaving definitely is good; be sure to do a wide area around each hot spot. It looks odd, but if you don't get all the hair off, NO treatment will work well. You can shave the inside of the ear flaps, too, to improve air circulation (he won't like the noise much!) If the ears are not terribly red and sore already, you could try a rinse of half rubbing alcohol and half white vinegar. That might help to clean and dry the ear. Use great care if you try to remove the material with a cotton swab. Don't get the alcohol anywhere near a hot spot, though, or use it if the ears appear inflamed! Cortisone spray is good; ointments are painful to apply. Oral diphenhydramine (Benadryl, an antihistamine), about 1 mg per pound body weight once or twice daily, may help. You have to use it fairly consistently to see a difference. A few dogs vomit on diphenhydramine--if so, discontinue. It may make him drowsy, as it does us, but that's not necessarily a bad thing with an itchy dog.

Best of luck.
