Regularly grooming your dog will help to keep his skin and coat shiny and healthy. It also provides you with the opportunity to check if your dog has fleas, ticks or any lumps that seem irregular.
Hair shedding is a natural process for your dog and influenced as much by the seasons as by indoor lighting and heating. Most dogs will shed their coat twice a year during fall and spring, however some breeds like the Rough collie and the Pekingese may shed hair all year long. Hair growth and hair shedding in dogs can be affected by their diet and hormonal fluctuations.
Dog breeds like the Pekingese and rough collie needs a weekly brush and regular grooming, this will help to remove all the dead hair.
Poodles with fancy hair cuts and Cocker spaniels will need to be groomed every four to six weeks. Shed hair in Poodles does not come out and have to be brushed out. The Maltese and Yorkshire Terriers will need grooming every two weeks or their hair will become matted. Dog breeds with short hair like shepherds or retrievers can be groomed every three to four months.
Bathing is also a very important part of grooming and will have to be undertaken more often for indoor dogs to keep them clean.
Things you can do to make sure your dog is well groomed;
Always use products specifically made for dogs, and arm yourself with the proper grooming equipment like a slicker brush, metal comb, pin brush and a bristle brush. Brush your dog's coat before you bath him to remove mats otherwise they will be very difficult to remove once your dog is wet. Keep your dog out of the cold when he is wet and brush his fur backward to remove excess undercoat.
Finally, give your dog's ears a good wipe with some cotton balls.
