Is your dog digging up the lawn or ruining your garden bed? There are many reasons why dogs dig and just as many ways how to train your dog to stop digging.
Many years ago my dog loved to dig. In fact he loved it so much that he turned my lovely green lawn and garden into a desert landscape. Every day I would leave for work and come back to find another gigantic hole left in the backyard. He was bored. Even though it was a large back yard there wasn't much for him to do so digging became his main occupation.
The longer a dog is left outside the more likely it is he will become bored and digging will become his way of releasing stress and finding something to do. Give your dog some exercise and take him for a walk. Play with him or try to think of other activities to entertain your dog.
Dogs don't try to be "naughty", they just do what comes naturally and what makes them feel at ease. The more tired he is the less likely he will turn to digging. Give him a bone to chew on or an interesting toy with food inside to keep him interested. Let your dog come inside more often and interact with 'his pack'. This is where dogs feel most comfortable as they don't naturally spend time by themselves.
But boredom isn't the only reason dogs like to dig. Puppies can find it fun to dig. The grass or sand might be cool on their feet and so they will dig because of the sheer enjoyment of it. Puppies do grow out of this behavior but it is worthwhile finding other activities your puppy can enjoy before it becomes a habit.
Other dogs will dig because they are looking for a cool place to lie. If you notice your dog tends to dig on hot days when he is left outside it is likely he is trying to get out of the heat. If this is the case make sure he has plenty of cool water and lots of shade. If your dog is comfortable and relaxed he is less likely to start digging.
If your dog really loves to dig it may be worthwhile giving him his own space where he can freely dig. While he watches bury a bone or toy in the area you have allocated for him. When he digs it up reward him with lots of praise. Keep this up every few days until he gets the idea. If he starts to dig in another area take him to his digging area and reward him when he digs there. Every now and then hide a bone in his 'special area' for him to find.
