Tips on grooming a Shih-tzus face?
I have 5 Shih-tzus and one Shih-poo. I groom them all since it is too expensive to take them all in and get them groomed. Three of my dogs sit still when I groom them, the other two do not. I am having a hard time cutting around the eyes. I use a curved scissors with ball tips and I also have Andis clippers. I am so scared I am going to poke them in the eye as they wiggle. I have tried to hold the dogs several different ways and I have tried to cover their eye with my thumb so they don't see the scissors. I am just not having much luck. Does anyone have some tips they are willing to share to make this easier on me and my dogs? THANKS!!
I like to use a small clipper to scoop in front of the eyes and then use thinning shears after wards to blend it in. Generally when I have a little difficult Shih-tzu I will hold them firmly by their beards and will sometimes blow in their face lightly before I go in with the clippers or scissors, this kind've stops them from squirming long enough for me to get the scissors close and once I can get the scissors in I can usually get in 2 or 3 snips real fast before they start wiggling again.
If this doesn't help maybe you can just take those 2 to the groomer and have them do in front of the eyes for you while you wait, we normally only charge like $5 for that where I work, but it'll save you a lot of trouble not having to fight with them. Then maybe once they get used to getting it done, they will let you do it.
